Contemporary Southwest Project

It isn't everyday that a client at the beach requests a southwest inspired style for their space. As a designer, this was so exciting to hear and it was a fun challenge to tackle. This client has amazing art work and jewelry which served as my source of inspiration for her home.

There were also some functional challenges that needed to be addressed. Storage was a necessity yet there wasn't a ton of square footage at our disposal so we had to get creative. I started designing the dining area first. I fell in love with the window treatment fabric and knew I had to build upon that. I wanted drama in this space and knew this was the way to achieve it.

I decided to add heavy draperies to frame in her beautiful large window. I knew this would create an imbalance in the dining area but had a plan. It seems counterintuitive to add built ins to a small area but sometimes design rules need to be broken. One of the functional requests my client has was to hide her water dispenser and I knew this was where I wanted to hide it. Below are some before and after photos showing the transformation of this space.

For the clients bedroom she also needed more storage. The solution, more built ins! I wanted this space to feel warm and calming and decided upon a walnut cabinet design. By the time all built ins were in place the client had more than enough storage. This is the key when designing, not just meeting the clients needs but exceeding them. Give the client room to grow as it is inevitable that items will be added over time so its important to foresee this and solve future problems before they arise.

Now for the bathroom, this was my opportunity to really create tremendous impact. I wanted a fresh, contemporary feel while retaining the southwest flair. I was really inspired by my clients horse photos and her rock collection. From here I was able to create my color palate. I knew I wanted an organic/ handmade feel so only one material came to mind, zelliege! I knew she would love this look and decided to wrap it around the entire bathroom and make a statement area at the vanity.

For the shower itself I wanted a warm, dimensional tile. My client expressed her disdain for grout and, who could blame her? Solution? Large format tile! This particular tile also allowed us to use a darker grout so it hides the dirt and grime that is inevitable in a shower. The window treatments in this space are the cherry on top. They were the absolute perfect blend of contemporary and southwest.

Needless to say I am thrilled with how this space turned out and it was an absolute joy to work on!
